Intro to Firefox2 for Educators Screencast

Over the next few weeks I will be producing screencast around helping educators move to Firefox2. A browser that in my opinion offers some great educational advantages. Over at my other blog home I asked Educators to give me the top 5 extensions to share with you as you learn how to customize your browser. I’m in the process of narrowing down the long list to five great extensions every educator should have. If you have a favorite Firefox2 extension leave a comment and I’ll put it on the review list!

I’ve made my students customize their class laptops with Firefox, and add the following add-ons (I use them too, as a teacher, but to me the conversation should include best add-ons for learners as well as teachers–and I know you know that :) )

    So:
Diigo–imho, the single most useful add-on PERIOD. Will Richardson recently discovered it and has been blogging on it, if you need an “expert” opinion ;-)

Answers: alt+click on any word for a popup with definitions and links to more info on the word you select. Great for vocab and researching words you don’t know. I learned what a “mameluke” is in one click while reading a history article. Imagine the productive speed this gives to vocab work for students.

    Cooliris: a handy little widget.

    That’s all for me.

  2. Jeff, congratulations on your screencast. Very professional looking. I downloaded it and synced to my daughter’s new video iPod and it has come up looking very clear and easy to follow. Loved the new intro and outro (what a creative student you have!).
Couple of Qs: did you use CamStudio or Camtasia to record it? Also, what would you recommend I use to convert the Mv4 file to play on my laptop?

  4. [...] My first screencast is up over at U Tech Tips. A very basic tour for educators to get them familiar with Firefox. Basically to show that all the things that you are familiar with in IE are still there. Plus you learn how to add a theme. [...]

One detail to watch for when installing Firefox–the “Download Firefox” button on mozilla.com, when my students went to it on our class laptops in Korea, offered Firefox IN KOREAN. Not helpful in an English-only school :)

So read the fine print under the button. Something like “Firefox in other languages”. It will take you to the English version.

    Great screencast!
