Twitter for teachers and students

Jeff’s a big fan of twitter. Personally I have avoided it because I have little need to know what other people are doing at any given moment and even less need to tell them what I am doing. Jeff, however has found uses for it:

If
you follow me on twitter than you probably don’t need to read this
post…but for those that are still not connected into the twitter
network here’s a little fun we had last night.

So
I took it upon myself to try and explain what makes Twitter so….should
I say addicting.
I tried…and failed horribly, but it has had me thinking these past
couple days, what is it about Twitter that makes it so interesting.
Twitter is kind of a mash up of blogging and instant messaging I’ve
decided. It has the conversation feel of a blog conversation as people
post links, talk about what they are working on in their schools, or
personal lives, and allows for a asyncroness conversation to take
place. It has the feel of IMing because you choose your friends, post
in short 140 character bursts and the use of symbols such as @ and D
are used to continue a conversation with one or more people.

The
interesting part is some of my twitter friends have given me
suggestions on things to try. Twitter as a support network…interesting
concept.

I
don’t get twitter. Really I don’t. My wife just keeps saying “This is
so stupid” which pretty much sums it up. But for some reason, it is so
much fun. My mobile phone doesn’t work here from China so I’m using the
IM feature that allows me to post to twitter directly from Google Talk,
although twitter seems to be having problems with the IM feature of
late, so I’ve been stuck posting directly on my twitter page.

But when  someone has decided Twitter is THE tool that has been missing in education, I wonder if Jeff has a hand in it?

From a skeptic, I have evolved into a devotee.

I use Twitter to stay connected to sympathetic souls; get technical assistance & problem solve; exchange new tools & applications.

It is social and utilitarian. It is social and career-focused.

My initial qualms have been totally blown out of the water by the connectivity and collegiality.

    Now, I’m a believer.
