I teach 11th and 12th grade Academic English. On Mondays, we do a "manic monday" - make a list of everything you learned last week in 3 minutes. Tuesday Tunes/Toons - respond to music or a cartoon. What if Wednesday - what if... all the leaves on the trees turned into dollar bills? (or some other wacky what if) Thoughtful Thursday - respond to a quote. Frankly Friday - write about whatever you like - your thoughts, dreams, a poem, short story, whatever. My kids look forwad to the what if and it makes them think a little deeper. In the beginning of the year, I get answers like, "if all the leaves turned into money, I'd be rich and I'd buy ..." At the end of the year I get, "IF all the leaves turned into money, we'd have to go to the barter system." I still get wacky answers, but they start supporting their answers with examples and details. Have a great year! I will write it on the white board and use it as a journal starter. "I wonder" what the kids will think about it. I think I am lucky to teach with technology, but I also think I am guilty of leaving out the opportunity for the kids to "wonder" about things. With a specific curriculum to accomplish in a short time, I will see where I can work with your two magic words! Traveling and living abroad sure does open your eyes to possibilities and makes you think outside the box. Living abroad forces you at times to be creative. I really like the idea that we can make ourselves more creative by changing our habits or trying something new. I think one great way we can do this is by traveling, it opens your eyes and mind to new possibilities and ways of doing things. A more extreme form, I think you and I can both attest, is living abroad.
