Digital Word Walls
Still creating ‘word walls’ around your classroom? Good for you – that’s exactly what needs to be done to create constant and progressive exposure to vocabulary. Here are some examples of our evolving digital forms of word walls and vocabulary building tools. Firstly, here’s an animated/spoken word wall that was built on visuals that ESL students chose to correspond to vocab (voice recorded in Apple Keynote):
And here’s an example of a “Vocabulary Groove” created in GarageBand. I’m hoping to gradually get students to make this kind of resource (and more) for each other.

I love this idea and can’t wait to have my students try it out! Thanks for sharing!
Great idea Jonathan.
What was used to create the first example?
Cool!

Hi Donna. I made ’spoken word wall’ example with Apple’s “Keynote” software. The voice was recorded into it using the Play > Record Slideshow function (during which I clicked through the words). Once the whole sequence (words/animation/voice) was recorded in Keynote I exported the slideshow (File > Export > Quicktime) so it was then a standalone ‘movie’. One thing I didn’t mention in the post was that I’d like to experiment with students making their own ‘digital word walls’, but then to share them with all of the other students so they can use them like flashcards on their iPods/PMPs.
