S2F2: The Shanghai Student Film Festival – Now Online!

The Shanghai Student Film Festival brought together students, teachers, and parents from all over the city to celebrate how video has changed the way students communicate. Our festival included student written narratives, documentaries, public service announcements, animations, and more.

Now, through the magic of the internets – we can take the festival to a broader audience. You can see all of our showcased videos at theShanghai Student Film Festival YouTube Channel.
The winner of our “Best in Fest” award went to Natalie James, at the Shanghai American School Pudong Campus, for her film The Reverie.

Take a moment to go over to our channel to watch some of our student work, and leave them some feedback!

This festival is a good start. Are there plans to open this to other school’s outside of China? It would be interesting to see a thematic challenge. For examples a 30 second videos category or maybe an on site video editing mash up competition.

    What do you think?

Hi Brian, thanks for your thoughts!
When we first started conspiring to have a festival, we were thinking of having an ‘online component’ in which students would be able to upload their videos to either YouTube or a similar site that we’d host ourselves. Getting the festival off the ground the first time around seemed like a big enough goal for our first year, but its something that is still on the table for our next festival.

We were thinking about thematic challenges as well. The Concordia school hosted something I’ve always wanted to do, which was a 24 hour video contest. In contests like these, students are given a title and (sometimes) a genre, and have to make a movie in 24 hours- including the writing, filming, editing, and exporting.

I do like the idea of a mashup competition as well. I think adding various events like those (I’d also like to see a Machinema competition) to build up to a final festival would be a great way of generating interest and enthusiasm.

We’re also looking to create an ‘all china’ festival or perhaps an East Asian Regional festival. It all depends on what we can handle and where interest from other schools/cities/countries lies.

Hey, quick question. Concerning film length, why can’t regular submissions be up to 7 minutes long? Its really confusing because S2F2 sent out two different application forms with two different criteria: one states that all films can be up to 7 minutes long while the other states that only films under the IB curricula can be up to 7 minutes long?

Hey how can we send our videos for the festival?
